{"id":562,"date":"2013-06-25T16:41:02","date_gmt":"2013-06-25T16:41:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sadlouskos.com\/Business-Consulting-Services\/?p=562"},"modified":"2013-09-03T21:50:22","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T21:50:22","slug":"higher-education-student-services-redesign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sadlouskos.com\/Business-Consulting-Services\/next-generation-student-services\/higher-education-student-services-redesign\/","title":{"rendered":"Higher Education Student Services Redesign in 6 Phases: An Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sadlouskos.com\/Business-Consulting-Services\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/medium_2521904717.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-564\" alt=\"medium_2521904717\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sadlouskos.com\/Business-Consulting-Services\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/medium_2521904717-300x199.jpg\" width=\"296\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sadlouskos.com\/Business-Consulting-Services\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/medium_2521904717-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sadlouskos.com\/Business-Consulting-Services\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/medium_2521904717.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a>Recently I revisited the report &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacc.nche.edu\/AboutCC\/21stcenturyreport\/21stCenturyReport.pdf\">Reclaiming the American Dream: Community Colleges and the Nation&#8217;s Future<\/a>&#8221; and the call to action for community colleges.\u00a0 The report identifies 3 overarching imperatives required to reimagine community colleges.\u00a0 These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Redesign students\u2019 educational experiences;<\/li>\n<li>Reinvent institutional roles; and<\/li>\n<li>Reset the system to create incentives for student and institutional success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The challenge for most higher education institutions is to identify where to put the stake in the ground and begin the reinvention process.\u00a0 Should the assessment process begin with people, process or technology- or all three? I recommend a 6- phase process for initiating a redesign.\u00a0 This blog post introduces the phases recommended for beginning a redesign effort.\u00a0 In subsequent posts, I will\u00a0 detail how to engage in each of the 6 phases.<\/p>\n<h2>6 Phases for a Student Services Redesign:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/13KBjM9\">Launch project<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/13OkwHO\">Assess the current organization<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1aHcHUN\">Conduct best practice research<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/13OmHGQ\">Develop a vision and goals<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Phase 5: Formulate Options for Student Service Models\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/170WsiQ\">Formulate options for student service models<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Create a go forward plan\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/15Bums1\" target=\"_blank\">Create a go forward plan<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>\u00a0Checklist for Launching a Student Services Redesign:<\/h2>\n<p>Pre-launch critical success actions that set a foundation for overall project success include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Committed executive sponsorship: President, Provosts, academic leadership, and administrative leadership all need to be on board for supporting this effort.<\/li>\n<li>Committed senior student services leadership: Provides resources and support for initiative.<\/li>\n<li>Assigned project leader with a work team: Using volunteers is tricky.\u00a0 A truly transformative initiative needs committed resources.\u00a0 If performance is only tied to day-to-day responsibilities that are unrelated to this initiative, only those responsibilities will be the priority. A best practice in overall project success is to formally allocate a % of the assigned individual\u2019s time to this initiative.\u00a0 Align project outcomes to performance metrics to guarantee the initiative maintains priority status.<\/li>\n<li>Allocated project administrative support. Communication, scheduling and resource management need to be carefully managed to ensure the project stays on track and continues to move forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\u00a0Question to Consider?<\/h2>\n<p>What will it take for my campus to prepare for a student services redesign effort?<\/p>\n<p>Do we have the right resources allocated to this initiative?<\/p>\n<p>What other campus partners can improve our success in executing this initiative?<\/p>\n<p>Questions about how to begin a student redesign initiative?
